There are many local places to visit that do not require a car or train! The favorites of the ICED'09 staff are listed below.



On Campus


Stanford Visitor’s Center

Located off the lobby at Memorial Auditorium

Hoover Tower

Completed in 1941 on Stanford’s 50th anniversary, the tower reaches a height of 285 feet. Admission is $2 to go up to the observation deck, which is the highest point on the Stanford campus.

Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve

The Preserve is home to remarkable geologic, topographic, and biotic diversity within its 481 hectares (1,189 acres) and has been used for scientific studies since the years Stanford University first opened. Nearby Huddart Park, operated by the San Mateo County Parks and Recreation Division, is a great place for picnics and retreats and has many of the same vegetation communities as Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve.

Stanford Dish

A popular area for hiking or running – the dish is used as a radiotelescope.
Open in August from 6 AM to 8 PM

SLAC – National Accelerator Laboratory

Memorial Church

This amazing centerpiece of the Stanford campus is located on the Quad, and is the center of spiritual and religious life at Stanford. Admire the amazing stained glass windows, the amazing exteriors, and know that this building lay in ruins back in 1906, along with much of the campus – following the San Francisco Earthquake.

Hanna House

This Frank Lloyd Wright house was built in 1937, and is known as the Honeycomb house. The house is located at Serra Street and Galvez Street on campus. A tour is scheduled for Thursday, 27 August 2009. Tickets are $10. Early reservations are advised if you wish to participate in this tour.
